ARTS PRESENTS Hot out of the oven! Stephanie Nugent curates this performance of works-in-progress by Southern California's most exciting contemporary choreographers ...a low key, highly creative night with the audience invited to share in the inspirations and investigations. Keith Johnson will share the early stages of his new quartet of solos inspired by the abstract sounds of George Crumb's music. A deeply humanistic artist, Johnson's dances are architecturally etched without denying the inherent emotionality of the human body. "thanks to, because, and yet, in spite of" is the second in a series of collaborative talking dances created in collaboration between Carmela Hermann and Kristen Smiarowski. The dance layers intricate physical movement, up-to-date news data, and current details about Hermann's personal life to invoke the complexity of living fully during challenging global times. Hermann will also present an in-progress duet with Luke Johnson, an odd couple of different generations and sexual orientations seeking common ground in their wildly funny search for intimacy. Built on a physicality that ranges from the hyperactive to the intensely stark, Taisha Paggett will perform her solo "we imitate fences" a work that explores one woman's shifting psychological state and comfort within the confines of a domestic space. Stephanie Powell brings to the stage a new portrait on the challenges of living with and loving an aging parent. Although having numerous dance credits to her name, this will be Powell's first appearance in Santa Barbara as a choreographer. Now a local favorite, Nugent will explore the manifestations and limitations of human empathy, in an in-process group work focusing on the transference of kinesthetic experience from one person to another. A reception will follow.
