AUGUST 24 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 8 SANTA BARBARA ACTORS SPEED THE PLOW
The Santa Barbara Actors Theatre Inc. announces the opening of its third season at Center Stage Theater with a satirical look at the near wealthy and near great of Hollywood: David Mamet's Speed the Plow, staged by Norman B. Schwartz, starring Robert Riechel Jr., Kimberly Reeder and Christian Trask When Speed the Plow premiered on Broadway at the Royale Theatre in May of 1988 with an all-star cast--Madonna, Joe Mantegna and Ron Silver--it broke the box office record for advance ticket sales, and won Silver a Tony Award. Newsweek wrote that "there's hardly a line in it that isn't somehow insanely funny or scarily insane." The New York Times called the play "Hilarious and chilling, with dialogue that skyrockets." Playwright David Mamet was born in Chicago in 1947, studied at Goddard College and with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. His first success was in 1976 with three Off-Off Broadway plays, The Duck Variations, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, and American Buffalo.. Glengarry Glen Ross won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1984; Speed the Plow followed in 1988, and Oleanna in 1992. He is an active screenwriter and director, best known for his screenplays of Wag the Dog, The Untouchables and The Verdict., as well as his direction of The Winslow Boy and his own original scripts House of Games and State and Main.
